A Day in the Argolid: Mycenae, Nafplio, and Ancient Epidaurus
This tour takes you through three of the most rewarding stops in the Peloponnese, each completely different from the last. You’ll start at Mycenae, walking through the Lion Gate into a citadel that was already ancient by the time classical Athens existed. This is where Homer’s “gold rich” kingdom once stood, and where the famous gold death mask, now in the National Archaeological Museum, was uncovered in the royal graves.
From there you’ll head to Ancient Epidaurus, home to the best preserved theater from antiquity. The acoustics are still tested by every visitor who stands on the stage, since a coin dropped there can be heard from the very top row, 14,000 seats away. The site was also an ancient healing sanctuary, and the surrounding ruins give a good sense of what an ancient wellness center looked like.
The day finishes in Nafplio, Greece’s first capital after independence, and one of the prettiest towns in the country. You’ll have time to walk the old town, take in the harbor, and see the Palamidi fortress and the small island fortress of Bourtzi from below.

Good to know: Comfortable shoes are a must, both Mycenae and Epidaurus have uneven ground. There isn’t much shade at either site, so sun protection and water are worth bringing along.
