Cape Sounion Half Day Tour
Cape Sounion sits at the southern tip of Attica, where the Aegean Sea stretches out in every direction. It’s one of the most dramatic settings for an ancient temple anywhere in Greece, perched on a cliff about 60 meters above the sea.
The temple itself is dedicated to Poseidon, god of the sea, and it made perfect sense to the ancient Greeks to build it here. Sailors leaving or returning to Athens would catch sight of its columns from the water, a landmark marking the edge of Attica. Lord Byron visited in the 19th century and famously carved his name into one of the columns, which you can still see today.
Most of what stands now dates to the 5th century BC, built around the same time as the Parthenon. Sixteen of the original thirty-four columns are still standing, and the setting does a lot of the work, white marble against blue sea in every direction.
Sounion is usually visited in the late afternoon, timed so you can watch the sunset from the temple. It’s one of those places where the light at the end of the day changes how the whole site feels, and the drive back along the coast afterward is part of the experience too.

Good to know: The site has some uphill walking and can get windy near the cliffs. Afternoon and sunset departures are the most popular, so book ahead if you want that time slot.
