Delphi sits high on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, and it’s easy to see why the ancient Greeks believed this was the center of the world. According to myth, Zeus released two eagles from opposite ends of the earth, and they met here, marking Delphi as the “navel” of the world, the omphalos.
This was home to the Oracle of Delphi, the most important prophetic site in the ancient Greek world. Kings, generals, and ordinary people traveled here for centuries to consult the priestess Pythia before making major decisions, from founding new cities to going to war. You’ll walk the Sacred Way up to the Temple of Apollo, where the Oracle delivered her prophecies, past the treasuries that city-states built to house their offerings.
The site also includes a well preserved theater, with views stretching down the valley toward the Gulf of Corinth, and a stadium higher up the hill where the Pythian Games were held, a competition second only to the Olympics in ancient Greece. The Delphi Archaeological Museum, right next to the site, holds some of the finest sculpture to survive from antiquity, including the bronze Charioteer of Delphi.
The drive itself is part of the experience, winding through the mountains of central Greece with views over olive groves and small villages along the way.

Good to know: Delphi involves a fair amount of walking on uneven ground and some uphill sections. Comfortable shoes are recommended, and it’s worth bringing water, especially in summer.
